Best British pub dishes

The restaurant "The Layton Rakes - JD Wetherspoon" in Blackpool, England, is a typical representative of the well-known British pub chain JD Wetherspoon, which is appreciated for its affordable food and drinks as well as its lively atmosphere. Located in the midst of the bustling seaside town, it attracts both locals and tourists looking to experience the charm of Blackpool. The name "Layton Rakes" refers to the historical connection of the area to the original settlement of Layton, which was linked to the sea by a path known as a "rake" in Scandinavian. This historical touch is also reflected in the design of the pub, which was built by Wetherspoon in 2011 and is situated at a location that once housed Whitehead’s Fish, Game, Poultry and Oyster Warehouse.

Historic pubs in Blackpool

The menu offers a wide selection of classic British dishes that reinforce the chain's reputation as a reliable provider of pub fare. Particularly popular is the Fish and Chips, a crispy fried fish served with thick chips, mushy peas, and a tangy tartar sauce—dish that perfectly captures British culinary culture. Equally appreciated is the Steak and Ale Pie, a hearty meat pie filled with tender beef in a rich beer gravy, enveloped in buttery puff pastry. For those preferring lighter options, there is the Grilled Chicken Burger, which impresses with fresh ingredients and a spicy sauce. The offering is complemented by a variety of real ales, including local and seasonal beers that change regularly, attracting beer enthusiasts. For dessert, a Sticky Toffee Pudding is often tempting, a sweet, warm cake with caramel sauce served with vanilla ice cream, providing a sweet conclusion to a visit.

Delicious food at Wetherspoon

The ambiance at The Layton Rakes is typical of Wetherspoon pubs: spacious, casual, and with a mix of traditional and modern design. The interior spans two levels, with the lower bar representing the main area and the upper floor providing a quieter alternative. A highlight is the rooftop terrace, which offers views of the surroundings and the coastline in nice weather and is a popular spot to relax. The decor is functional, featuring dark wood elements and decorations that remind visitors of Blackpool's history, such as old photographs and maritime accents. It is a place that invites guests to linger, whether for a quick lunch or a longer evening with friends.

Cozy rooftop pubs in England

The service is, as is customary at Wetherspoon, straightforward: guests order at the bar, and their food is brought to the table. The staff is often described as friendly and efficient, although there may sometimes be short wait times during peak hours. The pub is known for its versatility—it is family-friendly, with high chairs and a children’s menu, but also a popular gathering spot for groups exploring Blackpool's nightlife. Dogs are welcome too, making it a good choice for walkers. Regular events such as quiz nights or live sports broadcasts contribute to the lively atmosphere.

Didn't dine in,went there at 9pm and the staff said it's almost getting close, you have limited time so better look for some other restaurant,he was politely said and he was true to be honest. The restaurant was packed and crowded. Anyway it was not a suitable place for us.

Split over 2 floors, didn't seem as large as most others. Very busy and we had a long wait for food, that was a winter saturday mid-morning.
